Excellent interview. Mohler is right that the mainline is all but forgotten — but forgotten is not the same as gone.
Recovery in the SBC sense may be impossible; I suspect he's right about that. What cannot be allowed is for these churches to linger as endowment-fed, memberless NGOs, coasting on the capital of the faithful who built them.
The remedy is not revival but restitution: break them up, recover their assets, and return them to stewards who will honor the founders' intent. Britain has a Charity Commission for exactly this purpose. We have fifty state attorneys general.
Albert Mohler represents what is wrong with the American Church.
In 1903 Alice M. Baldwin wrote The New England Clergy and the American Revolution. She dedicated the book, “To the memory of my father, a congregational minister.”
In 2019 American Vision republished the book under a slightly reworded title, The New England Pulpit and the American Revolution. American Vision also added the subtitle, When American Pastors Preached Politics, Resisted Tyranny, and Founded a Nation on the Bible.
American Vision enthusiastically promotes the book as proof our nation has a righteous foundation, yet Baldwin’s illuminating book documents the opposite. It is a clear indictment of the New England clergy’s infection by John Locke and Enlightenment thinking. To quote Baldwin for example:
“Here is a minister in 1744 using the very arguments of 1775, declaring that subjects and rulers are bound by the constitution and that a law violating natural and constitutional rights is no law and requires no obedience. Here is clear evidence of the transmission through the clergy of the theories of Locke.”
Again,
“All through the New England colonies the ministers were helping to spread the theories of the philosophers and to give them religious sanction. Thus when the trouble with England came to a head, New Englanders were accustomed to thinking and to arguing for their rights in terms of natural law, the constitution, government by consent, and the right of resistance, and believed that by so doing they were following the injunctions of God.”
The Declaration of Independence and the heretical principles contained in its opening paragraphs are proof-positive of our nation’s foundational rationale. It is anything but an acknowledgment of Christ as King. It is the language of infidels. The repeated idolization of our founding fathers by Christian leaders like Mohler is the reason the American Church and by extension our nation are under the judgement of God. What we desperately need are leaders who will repudiate their heretical philosophies and restore political correctness according to God's Word which consists mainly in patient submission — not civil resistance. Only this will arrest our current Divinely orchestrated demise.

It was very encouraging to hear where Dr. Mohler's is on these issues. Next stop, let's save the SBC!
