The tectonic plates of the global order have been shifting for a while now. They started moving intensely in the 2010s and have yet to let up. Big changes are afoot. Some would like to blame Donald Trump and MAGA for these changes, but in most respects Trump and MAGA are reacting to events more than controlling them. As much as Americans like to think that we can control the global order given our economic and military power, we are more often at the mercy of events and stuck reacting to them. Certainly, we have more power than other nations, but that does not add up to much, especially in a global order that seems to be coming apart at the seams.
When the global order was less chaotic and our alliance system more harmonious, we were able to exercise influence with greater effect. It was never perfect, but the system ran about as smoothly as could be hoped.
